London and south-east 'could be worst hit in recession' PDF Print
ImageThe Local Government Association (LGA) claims that London and the south-east of England will be the worst hit by job cuts.

In news which may interest managers of fitness centres throughout the area, a spokesperson for the LGA has said job cuts in the financial services sector in London will have a "knock on effect" due to the amount of workers in the industry which commuted into the capital.

He added that how well a region performs during the run-up to a recession can be a key factor in how its survives the tricky economic climate.

"The south east and London haven't performed particularly well compared to the rest of the country in the last two years," said the spokesman.

"They've both performed, in economic terms, below average compared to rest of country in the last two years."

November 2008 figures from the Office for National Statistics found the employment rate for people of working age for the three months prior to September 2008 was 74.4 per cent, which was down 0.4 per cent from the previous quarter.
