An Olympic gold medallist is set to speak at a conference aimed at improving the health of people living in the Midlands.Steve Williams, who won gold in the rowing event at both the 2004 Athens Olympics and in Beijing this summer, is set to be the 'star speaker' at the Living Well West Midlands' annual conference. The Birmingham Mail reports the conference, which will be held at the Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston on November 17th, aims to focus on the growing levels of obesity found in people across the UK. Paul Winterbottom, director of Living Well West Midlands, told the newspaper the conference plans to help "improve the quality of life" for people across the region. "We have already helped thousands of people across the region and we are not even at the end of our first year," he added. "We will be working to increase this number substantially over the coming two years of the initiative." Last month, Ribble Valley council in Lancashire appointed Zoe Pickard as its healthy lifestyle co-ordinator. The Lancashire Telegraph reported she aims to work with fitness and leisure centres across the area over the coming months. ![]() |
