Small businesses 'missing out on relief' PDF Print
ImageSmall businesses could be missing out on tax rate relief, according to new figures.

Recent research in the borough of Bracknell, which may mirror general trends across the UK, found that out of 1,130 businesses eligible for tax relief, only 443 were actually receiving it, according to getbracknell.co.uk.

Businesses with properties with a rateable value of less than £5,000 are eligible for a 50 per cent discount and those with a value of under £15,000 are also entitled to smaller reductions.

Robin Lawrence, Thames Valley Chairman for the Federation of Small Businesses, said company owners may "just not be aware" of the possible discounts.

He added that his organisation has written to Gordon Brown to propose new measures which could help give both a "boost to the economy" and aid small businesses to "get back on track".

The Daily Mail recently reported that a survey by insurance firm RSA found that 11 per cent of small businesses were struggling to operate, which could lead to an estimated 517,000 firms going under.
