Business jargon 'can hinder productivity' PDF Print
ImageSmall businesses can be damaged by the use of jargon, according to an industry expert.

John Spencer, chief executive officer of MWB Business Exchange, said the use of jargon can cause unnecessary confusion and misunderstanding.

Recent research by the firm found that 25 per cent of workers in small businesses use such "buzz words".

This is in comparison to the 98 per cent of employees found to be using them regularly in large companies.

Some three-quarters of respondents said jargon "hindered productivity" in the work place.

Mr Spencer said: "A lot of the time it comes down to laziness, as buzz words are used to save time instead of thinking about the most appropriate phrase.

"There is no room for confusion and it's time to start applying common sense to what we say in the office as well as in the real world."

Waltham Forest council in London recently refused to follow the lead of others and remove jargon from its public information documents.

Thisislocallondon.co.uk reported the council claims its residents do not want information "dumbed down".
