UK is 'worst in Europe for identity theft' PDF Print
ImageA new survey has found the UK is the worst area in Europe for identity theft.

Research by international payment service PayPal found that 14 per cent of people in the UK have been a victim of identity theft, compared to three per cent in Germany, five in Spain and six per cent in France.

In news which may be important to organisations which allow membership fees to be paid online, the Global Trust and Safety Report also found that 49 per cent of internet users are "very concerned" about the issue.

Michael Barret, chief information security officer for PayPal, said identity theft is more prevalent in countries where "a higher percentage of e-commerce is concentrated".

"But e-commerce is growing in prominence around the world, and fraudsters will likely follow the money," he added.

Research by security firm Symantec recently found that only 21 per cent of people believe their data is secure in the hands of organisations.

According to which.co.uk, three-quarters of the respondents voiced concerns about the amount of data companies hold about them.
