Government 'aiming to help small businesses' PDF Print
ImageThe government is set to announce a new range of measures to help small businesses access much-needed finance.

Lord Peter Mandleson, the new business secretary, has told MPs the government "shares the pain" felt by small firms.

He added that new steps are being taken by the government to ensure that banks can begin to lend money to those businesses in need again.

Lord Mandleson said: "We are on the side of small and medium sized businesses and understand that they are facing tough times.

"But we're determined to do more. Businesses tell us they need access to cash flow."

Earlier this week, the Birmingham Post reported a survey conducted by Clifton Asset Management which found that 65 per cent of small business owners in the Midlands are putting retirement plans on hold.

The respondents said they felt retirement was "now further away" than it seemed 12 months ago.
