Employers should ensure they implement an appropriate criminal records check when recruiting staff, according to the industry trade body. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has said that a number of employers have a "lack of awareness" of when to make a criminal records check. In news which may be of interest to people looking to employ new fitness instructors, it added that a criminal records check is not the "be all and end all" of a quality recruitment practice. Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the REC, said that people can "tend to be quite nervous" around the issue. "Criminal record checks are not the be all and end all of good quality recruitment practice and sometimes people are just looking for a tick box approach which won't necessarily offer you the security you need," he added. An investigation broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Face The Facts programme found that requests had been made to the Criminal Records Bureau to check people employing for jobs as train drivers, gardeners and bricklayers. ![]() |
