New figures have found that at least 12,700 people are now classed as obese in Flintshire. In news which may interest people considering opening a fitness centre in the area, the recent figures from the National Public Health Service for Wales found that a number of surgeries in the area had over 1,000 overweight patients registered. The Evening Leader reports that the government claims that making more gyms open for the public can help to tackle the problem. Paul Taylor, fitness instructor at local gym PT Fitness, told the newspaper the obesity rates "are worrying". "It can sometimes be a problem for smaller gyms to attract people who are being referred by their doctors, as it is mostly done by the local authority," he added. "People need to be helped to see that gyms are not just places where fit people go to stay fit they are also places where you can go to get fit and improve your health." A study by the Fitness Industry Association recently found that 40 per cent of people who start a new fitness regime will "fall off the fitness wagon" in the first 12 months, the Guardian reported. ![]() |
