Businesses must be careful to protect their customers' information to avoid putting them at risk of fraud, it has been claimed.According to the Ponemon Institute, if private and confidential data from customers is compromised as a result of a breach the individuals involved are exposed to the possibility of identity theft and credit card fraud. "While the threat of falling victim to ID theft as a result of this kind of incident may be low, the threat is present," Mike Spinney, communications director at the independent research company, said. He added that if such an incident did occur it is vital for companies to assess whether the information had been targeted for theft or had been lost as a result of negligence. The organisation also stated that the increasing use of laptops, notebooks, mobile phones and memory sticks means that protecting data is a difficult task for companies. Mr Spinney said that taking measures to protect such information is not a "one-size-fits-all" approach and requires a thorough understanding of what data the organisation collects and how it is used. ![]() |
