The Institute of Risk Management (IRM) has warned that businesses need to have "workable processes" in order to "prevent misuse of data".

In news which may be of interest to clubs which hold information relating to its members and their membership payment details, the institute added that the management strategies should "balanced and practical", otherwise people will not follow it.

Ian Fraser, marketing manager at the IRM, said risks "need to be identified and then managed".

"These processes must be practical so that they are used but not too loose that they are irrelevant and do not provide any worthwhile protection," he added.

Disaster Recovery Solution recently warned that 20 per cent of all businesses will suffer fire, theft, flood or storm damage, power failures, terrorism or hardware/software disaster.
