Personal data 'must be handled in a responsible way' PDF Print
ImageOrganisations need to be accountable for the way they deal with confidential information, according to an industry expert.

In news which may affect gyms and clubs who store valuable membership information, the Open Rights Group (ORG) has said that businesses and other organisations need to ensure they are "handling personal data in a responsible way".

Becky Hogge, executive of the ORG, warned that the loss of such information can "significantly affect the lives" of people affected.

She added that those involved could become victims of identity fraud or harassment.

"Think of it a bit like the company bank account - you wouldn't give every employee access to it without clear accountability, security and authorisation processes in place," said Ms Hogge.

"The right approach to data handling involves a mix of data minimisation, staff training, and security techniques like encryption."

A non-governmental organisation, the ORG raises public awareness on issues such as privacy, data protection, identity and access to knowledge.
