Small business owners 'give but do not take pay rises' PDF Print
ImageSmall business owners are more likely to give their staff a pay rise, according to a new study.

Research from Abbey Business Banking found that 51 per cent of owners have not given themselves a pay rise in the last 12 months.

However, only 15 per cent said they have denied giving their staff more money despite the current economic conditions.

Some 26 per cent of the 300 respondents said they had not given themselves a bonus in the same period, compared to only ten per cent that denied a bonus to their employees.

Paula Ickinger, head of marketing for Abbey Business Banking, said the "times remain tough" for businesses.

"Inflationary pressures mean it's difficult for business owners to say no to staff trying to cope at a time when the cost of living continues to climb steadily higher, however many are compensating by not taking a pay rise themselves," he added.

Dilys Robinson from the Institute for Employment Studies recently said that providing incentives for employees can provide extra motivation which can benefit businesses.
