40% of people 'fall off fitness wagon in first year' PDF Print
ImageFour out of every ten people who have been inspired to take up sport due to the success of the Beijing Olympics will "fall off the fitness wagon" within 12 months, according to a new report.

A study by the Fitness Industry Association found that 40 per cent of novices will give up their new healthy regime within the first year.

Greg Whyte, from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, told the Guardian that people need to "be patient".

"Don't expect too much, too soon, or you'll lose motivation," he warned.

"The commonest reason I see for people failing to maintain an exercise regime is that it is too challenging for their existing level of fitness."

The BBC reported that Experian's Hitwise company found the traffic to retailers of sport and fitness goods rose 36 per cent year-on-year during August following the Beijing Games.

British success in cycling was said to see bicycle retailers in particular receive a boost.
