Fitness industry 'needs female role models' PDF Print
ImageThe sport and fitness industry needs more female role models, according to a TV favourite.

Kirsty Gallagher, who used to be seen on Sky Sports News and has since carved out a successful presenting career on programmes such as Gladiators, told Dudley News that Olympic gold medal winners such as Rebecca Adlington are ideal role models to "inspire" women.

She added that recent figures showing only one in five women regularly participate in exercise "shocked" her and said that British attitudes are "stuck in the dark ages".

"There's a huge old school which still exists, that see sport as a male domain and would quite like to keep it that way," added Ms Gallagher.

"Nike did research to find out how women see sport in terms of being unsexy and unfeminine and the British were way behind most European countries."

A survey by ING Direct bank found that parents are now willing to spend up to £700 a year on sporting activities for their children, with 37 per cent admitting that it was a dream to see their youngsters compete at the 2012 London Olympics.
