ImageParents spend up to £3.3 billion a year on sporting activities for their children, according to a new study.

A survey by bank ING Direct found that parents are willing to spend up to £700 a year on kit, transport and membership fees to enable their kids to participate in sport.

Some 43 per cent of the 1,450 parents questioned said they hoped sport would encourage their kids to switch off the TV and "get active".

Another 37 per cent said they dreamed their children could win gold at the 2012 Olympics.

The favourite sports for participation include swimming, football and martial arts.

Johan de Wit, ING chief executive, said: "Seeing your kids succeed in sport is one of the best feelings a parent can have and it’s great that the Olympics are inspiring more and more young people to take part."

Andrew Lansley, the shadow secretary of state for health, recently said that positive messages about healthy living need to be given to the public in order to tackle obesity.
