A care trust is set to help tackle the obesity problem in its area by subsidising gym memberships for people. The South West Essex Primary Care Trust has received £20 million funding from the Strategic Health Authority, reports the Echo. Some £150,000 of the money is set to be used to subsidise gym memberships for overweight people under the trust's plans to "tackle obesity". It also aims to spend £120,000 on Weightwatchers and Slimming World vouchers which GPs can prescribe to obese patients. Bill Walshe, spokesman for the trust, told the newspaper it plans to "invest in services" which improve the health of "the whole community". "Schemes such as helping to fund weight loss, or gym classes, will save the NHS money in the long-term, as improving people's lifestyle lowers the chance of them developing chronic conditions such as heart disease or type two diabetes," he added. Plans for the development of a former primary school in Hull have been unveiled by the Avocet Trust, which aims to build a centre of excellence for people with learning difficulties. Contained in the plans are a range of facilities including a gym, and both a training and therapy centre, thisishullandeastriding.co.uk reports. ![]() |
