Employee absence costs 'on the rise' PDF Print
ImageA study has found that businesses have to cope with higher average costs of absence per employee than 12 months ago.

The ninth annual absence study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development found that the average cost is now £666 per employee, up from the 2007 figure of £659.

Dofonline.com reports that employee absence across all UK sectors dropped to eight days per year, from last year's figure of 8.4 days.

The study also found that the main causes of short-term absences among employees were colds, flu and stomach upsets.

Some 80 per cent of companies claimed that absence represents a "significant" or "very significant" cost to their organisation

Health Insurance and Protection magazine recently reported that employers need to be "more proactive" in spotting workers mental health problems before they become too severe.
