Interest in business start-ups is 'encouraging' PDF Print
ImageThe number of new businesses opened so far in 2008 has been described as "encouraging" by an industry expert.

George Derbyshire, the chief executive of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies (NFEA), has described the current situation for potential new start-up businesses as "not totally discouraging".

He added that reported figures, and feedback from colleagues around the country, had found a "good level" of interest from people in starting up new businesses in the first half of 2008.

"It seems logical that people in secure jobs might defer going it alone, but on the other hand if we see an upturn in unemployment, which seems likely, we may see another flow of new starts," said Mr Derbyshire.

The British Chambers of Commerce's Quarterly Economic Survey for the second quarter of 2008 found that the results were "ominous" and commented that there was a "serious risk of recession".
